The Joussard Community Association is already looking for volunteers to sit on its Canada Day planning
committee.

Round Dance in Grouard Nov. 20
Northern Lakes College will be hosting a Round Dance Friday, Nov. 20 at the Grouard Campus gymnasium.
Constituency could be renamed
The provincial constituency of Dunvegan-Central Peace could be renamed in honour of former MLA Grant
Notley.
More than marching and drills
The High Prairie Native Friendship Centre was pleased to host police cadets from Duncan’s First Nation and
Driftpile First Nation Oct. 24 at Prairie River Junior High School. The cadets participated in several drill
instruction sessions and had the pleasure of seeing a police dog demonstration. The High Prairie chapter is
sponsored by the Friendship Centre. Executive director Vicky Barsalou and Karlynn Willier, who oversees the
program locally, were very pleased and proud of their cadets.

who pay town taxes by the way, are struggling to say the least in these trying times. Someone coming in for a
few days to “test” the market, is nothing but a shameless money grab of our local dollars.
Pomeroy celebrates spooky day
The Pomeroy Inn and Suites held its third annual pumpkin carving contest Oct. 31. So many people attended
this year’s contest tables were set up in the lobby to accommodate pumpkin carvers.

New roads will be protected
The M.D. of Big Lakes council received assurances at its Oct. 28 meeting that its roads under construction
will be protected throughout the winter.
Money well spent, says Welch
The portable outhouses placed at the Grouard Bridge this summer for fishermen to use was money very
well spent, says Grouard Councillor Fern Welch.
Kinuso Arena grant approved
Council unanimously approved a grant of $38,618.74 to help with construction of the Kinuso Community
Centre at its Oct. 28 meeting.
Wapsewsepi sends thank-you
Wapsewsepi Enterprises joined Swan River First Nation in thanking council for its sponsorship of the
Annual Rodeo and Sports Days.

A High Prairie youth court judge was not buying a teenage boy’s excuse that alcohol made him break into a
Driftpile home wearing a disguise.
Man jailed 76 days for assault
A man who was so drunk he barely remembered assaulting his common-law wife will be spending the next
76 days in jail.
Argument escalates into assault
A Driftpile man who repeatedly assaulted his common-law wife was sent to jail for an additional 30 days for
his actions.

Posegate new Kinuso FCS employee
Family and Community Services executive director Sharon Strang informed council Oct. 28 that Daisey
Posegate was hired to fill the community worker position at the Kinuso office.

M.D. administration will be making several upgrades at their office in Kinuso soon, CAO Jeff Renaud
informed council.
Food regulations tightening
The M.D. of Big Lakes barbecue was a huge success with about 285 people attending, Family and Community
Services executive director Sharon Strang told council at its Oct. 28 meeting.

Council agreed to purchase a quarter-page ad in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Military Service Recognition Book.
Marigold’s gets council nod
Council agreed at its Oct. 28 meeting to nominate Marigold Enterprises for the Employer of Persons with

Boy leaves fingerprints at scene of the crime
A healthy dose of fingerprints left at the scene of a break and enter resulted in the easy arrest of a Driftpile
boy, High Prairie youth court heard Oct. 19.

An irritated judge doubled the community service hours for a Grouard boy who landed himself in trouble with
the law.
Woman clears up charges
It took four years but charges against a 21-year-old woman were finally dealt with in High Prairie youth
court Oct. 19.

Each month during the school year, E.W. Pratt High School will be selecting three outstanding students who
best exhibit the qualities in a chosen characteristic. September was ‘kindness’ month at Pratt

Guided Reading is part of the Language Arts program at Bishop Routhier School.
Students read on a regular basis in their own classrooms. Teachers put the students in small groups and
each person has an opportunity to read and learn at their own reading level. The children enjoy this style of
reading activity and teachers believe that Guided Reading helps students improve their reading dramatically.
What’s happening in Grade 3?
Every morning when they arrive to school, they do their morning Math booklets. It is practice of concepts
already covered in class. In Math, they are learning subtraction and addition of greater numbers.
Meet our Grade 1 teacher
Susan Cunningham is the Grade 1 teacher at Bishop Routhier School. She has been teaching at out school for
the past three years. Cunningham came from Medicine Hat, AB. She likes Grade 1 because she said they are
honest and lots of fun.
Spooky school scariness
It is that scary time of year again! Students at BRS were busy making crafts, such as masks and skeletons.
Lots of Halloween writing activities and making decorations keep the students busy as they eagerly awaited
the excitement of Halloween.
Grade 6 Proverbs
Students in Grade 6 were asked to finish the following sentence: “The grass is always greener. . .” “When you
paint it green!” “When you pour Skittles on it!” “When you mow it!” “It’s fake!” “At the neighbour’s!” “After

High Prairie town council has turned down a request from the High Prairie and District Beautification
