The accolades were many and the gifts greatly appreciated, as the community of Gift Lake continued the tradition of recognizing their members for a variety of feats.
The 10th annual recognition awards night was held at the community centre Nov. 2. Awards and gifts were presented to all recipients in every category from Head Start to post-secondary education.
“It’s been well supported by our council,” says organizer Jennifer Laderoute. “This is an event that takes a lot of work.”
Corinne Goulet-Auger emceed the event, beginning with the Head Start Awards. Later, she announced the six major community awards, including the Youth Member-of-the-Year, presented to Neil Lamouche for his musical talents.
“Our selection for this year is a truly gifted individual,” says a short statement she read about Lamouche. “In the span of just 17 short years, he has discovered the gift of music.”
He has competed in many talent competitions and performed at venues in Alberta. He’s also Alberta’s Youth Representative, which promotes youth volunteerism, and is always involved in local events.
Dave Lamouche, his dad, accepted the award on his behalf from Hector Lamouche, council chairman.
The Teacher-of-the-Year Award was presented to Amy McLean for her dedication and “always going the extra mile for the students. She’s tough when she needs to be, yet understanding and considerate when she has to be.”
Teresa Anderson received the Settlement Employee-of-the-Year Award. Anderson has been involved with many aspects of the settlement’s administration and isn’t afraid to speak her mind and fight for what’s right, regardless of the opponent.
“This individual is both well-known and well-liked by the whole community. This individual has tried to provide equal opportunities for employment to everyone in the community and has always been there to lend a hand,” Goulet-Auger read from her statement.
David Drummond presented a framed photo to Anderson.
Joyce Laderoute received the Community Member-of-the-Year Award. She’s involved with school- and community-based functions and church.
“She always seems to be flitting around behind the scenes and lending a hand whenever she can. She is always involved in fundraising events, both in donating her time and donating towards the event, whatever the cause,” reads her statement.
Kelly Cunningham and Hector Lamouche presented a framed photo to her.
The Elder-of-the-Year Award went to a “tough as nails” recipient, Gladys Anderson. She isn’t afraid to tell it like it is and is always ready to step in and lend a hand.
“She is the backbone of her family and all of her children know that when they need it, she is there for them and helps as much as she can,” Goulet-Auger read from Anderson’s statement.
Bill Flett, Anderson’s brother-in-law, received a framed photo on her behalf from Sherry Anderson.
Cheryl Kosey is distinguished as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Goulet says Kosey has shown herself to be an integral part of the community, which includes supporting and spearheading the funding for the Aboriginal Healing Foundation. She also completed her Social Work degree and is involved with youth and Elders in many ways and venues.
Kelly Cunningham, Kosey’s nephew, accepted a framed photo on her behalf from Hector Lamouche.
