It’s tough to tell whether the glass is half full or half empty for the High Prairie Regals so far this season.
The Regals split two road games last week winning at Vallevyiew 4-3 Nov. 19 but losing at Fairview 5-3 Nov. 21.
The Regals are 2-2 after a dreadful 0-3 start so improvement is evident.
On the positive side, the goals against are down with only eight allowed the last two games compared to 34 the first four and the club is winning.
However, the club ranks last with a woeful 4.17 per cent power play (only one goal in 24 chances) while also ranking last in shots on goal for (32.67 per game) and shots on goal against (45.67 per game).
Improvement must occur if the club will make a serious run at the better teams in the league this season.
The Regals won in Valleyview with a good effort. In the first period, they used a ferocious forecheck to keep the Jets in their end most of the period. Craig Van de Ligt and Kelly Cunningham gave the Regals a 2-0 lead but Ken Breland’s power play goal with 23 seconds left in the period gave the Jets some life.
The result must have been disappointing for the Regals who deserved a far better fate if not for the efforts of goaltender Brent Ilg.
The Jets rebounded to take a 3-2 lead after two periods as Mackenzie Caron scored both goals at even strength.
In the third, captain Rollie Gladue scored an unassisted short-handed goal at 8:21 with Lloyd Ah-Kim-Nachie in the sin bin for high-sticking.
Ira Gladue scored the game-winner with 6:16 left and the Regals hung on for the win.
Clarence Cunningham recorded the win in his debut making 47 saves.
In Fairview two nights later, the Regals battled back from one-goal deficits three times to tie the game but surrendered two goals in the final 6:04 and lost.
Brandon Hill was a pain in the Regals behind all night as he scored four goals and assisted on the other marker by Travis Bettenson.
Lawrence Anderson tied the game 1-1 in the first, Steven Thunder tied it 2-2 in the second and Ah-Kim-Nachie 3-3 in the third.
The Kings outshot the Regals 30-26 and were two for seven on the power play while the Regals were scoreless in four chances.
The Regals face the same opponents this week as last but this time on home ice. The Regals host Valleyview Nov. 26 and Fairview Nov. 28 at the Sports Palace. Game time for both contests is 8 p.m.
