High Prairie residents may one day be able to watch town council meetings on TV.
Jeff Burgar, an employee of KBS-TV, made a presentation to council during the Nov. 25 meeting. Burgar proposed a motion for video cameras and other recording devices to be allowed in the chamber.
He also proposed a second motion for council to cover the cost of a “decent sound system and cameras,” which would be approximately $15,000.
“Such a system would then be available for all users,” says Burgar.
Citing a conflict of interest, Burgar left the chamber when council discussed the matter later. Councillor James Waikle asked if the first motion was required. Mayor Rick Dumont says no, as people such as the media are permitted to use their recording devices without being told to cease.
Interim CAO Archie Grover says there’s no prohibition for recording devices, including TV cameras, from being used in the chamber.
Councillor David Vanderwell doesn’t have any concerns. They can be used in the chamber, just don’t disrupt the proceedings, he says.
Council passed two motions. The first is to draft a policy permitting video recording devices in the chamber for KBS-TV and other interested parties, for council’s consideration. The second is to investigate the cost of a sound system, which includes finding partners to split it. The second motion will be part of council’s 2010 budget deliberations.
