Students at Hillview School in East Prairie Métis Settlement participated in the fifth annual March Against Violence Nov. 26.
With banner in hand, they marched from the school to the water treatment plant and back.
Jason BigCharles, a Grade 5-6 teacher, is pleased with their participation.
“We’re walking to stop violence, it’s not talked about a lot,” he says.
Only the students participated, but organizer Yvonne Ferens is pleased. She runs the Aboriginal Healing Foundation programs, which includes the March Against Violence. The AHF programming is slated to end in March 2010 and Ferens hopes the walk will continue.
“I hope the community continues with the anti-violence message,” she says.
Hillview School will hold two events in December. The first is Métis Week, Dec. 7-11, as Elders will tell stories and there will be jigging, as well as arts and crafts.
The school also holds its Christmas concert Dec. 16, beginning at 6 p.m.
