Many of the shelves at the High Prairie and District Food Bank are low or empty and as the recession has hit many families hard, the need this Christmas will likely be greater than ever.
“We’re just staying afloat right now,” says food bank coordinator Kim Dumont. “We hope the community will be generous and help us to get through Christmas.”
The food bank helped 385 families in 2008 and 413 families in the first 11 months of 2009.
The food bank is short of items such as juice boxes, cookies, granola bars, fruit cups, canned vegetables, canned milk, peanut butter, jam, rice and pastas. They could also use items such as coffee, tea, baby formula and diapers.
However, the Bethel Baptist Church has made generous donations and E.W. Pratt High School conducted a food drive in early November. Local grocery stores have also provided items, which Dumont appreciates.
Moreover, needy families can participate in Santa’s Little Helper. Dumont has the forms and refers applicants to the High Prairie and District Children’s Resource Council, which is holding the program.
The food bank is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. For drop off or pick up, please call Dumont at 780-523-5777.
