Promotions, games at cadets’ dinner

The High Prairie Royal Air Cadet Squadron No. 539 knows how to celebrate their achievements and recognize their own.

They held their annual Christmas Mess Dinner at the Royal Canadian Legion Dec. 2, with approximately 70 people attending.

Lt. Verna Ogg, their commanding officer, introduced the head table and highlighted the resurgence of the program.

“Due to the increase in training instructors, we’ve been able to put forward a better training program for the cadets,” she says.

The instructors include Don Ebbett, Dan Gillmor, Rick Impey, Mike Rudkin and Gary Quinn, while Candace Cunningham handles the administrative tasks. Lt. Ogg thanks them for their dedication to the cadets and the program.

The program will continue to get better as long as enrolment remains high, she adds.

Lt. Ogg also thanks the parents for their support, the Royal Canadian Legion for its sponsorship and the Air Cadet League for its ideas to keep the cadets interested.

Later, Barbie Cramer, a representative of the Air Cadet League, presented flowers to Rosemarie Halldorson in recognition of her commitment as a parent to the program.

Following dinner, Cpl. Anthony Rudkin offered a toast to Queen Elizabeth in English and Cpl. Arianna Quinn offered it in French.

Concluding the evening, Lt. Ogg handed promotions to Crean Capot, Kevin Cramer, Larissa Halldorson, Conrad Kortuem-Starr, Shawn Marcoux, Arianna Quinn, Justin Rauch and River Willier. Laine Roberts was also promoted, from Air Cadet to Leading Air Cadet, but he didn’t attend the dinner.

Lt. Ogg says promotions are based on attendance, dress and deportment (demeanour, conduct and attitude), training and leadership skills.

The parents prepared the potluck dinner and the unused food was donated to the High Prairie and District Food Bank.

The cadets also collected and donated non-perishable items for the food bank for the area’s needy.
