An early 16-4 deficit proved to be the difference as the Valleyview Hillside Cougars won the opening game of the basketball season over the hometown E.W. Pratt Chargers Dec. 3.
The Cougars raced to the big lead and led 18-6 after one quarter and a 32-18 halftime lead.
Their stout defence in the first quarter combined with erratic shooting from the Chargers was very evident. After the first quarter, however, the Chargers stayed even by being outscored by only two points the rest of the game. If nothing else, the Chargers know they can be competitive with the Cougars despite the loss.
Chris Van Dangen led the Courgars with 15 points while Tim Green added a dozen. Orrin Berry had eight points, Hans Grotkowski and Josh Haldinatt six each while Jesse Schar had five.
Jordan Ford had 12 points in a losing cause to lead the Chargers. The rest of the scoring was spread among several players. David Olanski had six points while Andrew Gingerich, Billy McCue and Josh Sawka each had four. Nathan Gingerich and Amadeus Giroux each had a bucket to complete the scoring.
