The Sucker Creek Women’s Shelter has received a donation of $10,725.52, thanks to the volunteer efforts of Darlene Lightning-Mattson and Edna Willier.
They volunteered to help with the Alberta Ladies Petroleum Classic golf tournament in Beaumont Sept. 11, selling tickets and sitting at the 11th hole for the hole-in-one $10,000 prize.
Lightning-Mattson is pleased with the donation.
“I was very excited,” she says. “Any money is (greatly appreciated) and this is overwhelming.”
Lighting-Mattson also gave a speech about what the money would be used for, which will be to replace furniture in the shelter’s four apartments, as the shelter has no budget for it now. She wants the refurnishing completed by Christmas.
A single woman can stay for six months and a woman with children can stay for as long as one year in the apartments.
The shelter qualified for the donation because it’s a non-profit organization.
“We’ve always chosen charities that are for women in need,” says Sheila Picton, one of the tournament organizers. “We look for charities only in Alberta.”
They also look for charities which give women the opportunity to make the transition into long-term independence, also known as the second stage.
The ALPC tournament is for women in the petroleum industry and participants must derive at least 80 per cent of their income from the producing, engineering, drilling, service and supply segments of the gas and oil industry.
The tournament has donated over $70,000 to Alberta women’s shelters over the last five years, including to the Hope Haven Women’s Shelter in Lac La Biche
