Fears the Enilda Firemen’s Market may be forced to close because the Enilda and District Society for Recreation and Culture was considering closing the hall can now be put to rest.
Jean Bissell, director of the society, says cash problems were solved quickly last week.
“We’ll have the hall open for another year!” she says.
In an earlier interview, Bissell said EDSRC could not continue to operate the hall in the red.
“We’re not getting enough revenue,” she says. “We can’t keep going in the hole.”
Cost to operate the hall average about $700-800 a month.
However, EDSRC did not access an operating grant from the M.D. of Big Lakes, who allots money to community groups who operate halls. Bissell says a cheque has since been sent to EDSRC for about $3,400.
Next, year, that amount will increase by 25 per cent after the M.D. council agreed to increase its per capita grant to $102 per capita from $82.
The money does not go only toward hall rent. Grass cutting and other maintenance are expenditures community groups spend the grant on.
Table rent will be increasing to $15 a table from $10 in 2010, says Bissell.
Table rent has been $10 per table since the market opened over 10 years ago.
Also, 50-50 tickets may be sold at each market as another way to raise revenue.
