Sports: Back-to-back wins has Regals back in hunt

Cannon Cunningham

Ira Gladue’s fourth goal of the night whizzes past Lakeland Eagles’ goaltender Cannon Cunningham during the clash of traditional rivals Dec. 10. Cunningham relieved starter Nelson Tallman just over halfway through the game and allowed three goals in his team’s 9-6 loss to High Prairie.

A week ago it looked like the High Prairie Regals were in big trouble with a 2-7 record and three games against the East Division’s best clubs smack in their headlights.

But a 9-6 home ice win over the Lakeland Eagles and a 5-4 win at Falher have the Regals at 4-7 and back in the race in the tightly-jammed East Division of the North Peace Hockey League.

New goaltender Ian Chwok was the difference in both games. He made 46 saves in the win over Lakeland, then followed it with a 35-save performance in Falher.

The Regals continued to score as they netted nine over powerhouse Lakeland in handing them their first loss of the season – their other loss was due to an ineligible player.

Ira Gladue scored four goals and added an assist while Kelly Cunningham and Lloyd Ah-Kim-Niche each added a pair. Lawrence Anderson added the other goal and two helpers.

Tyler Shantz, now the NPHL’s leading scorer, and Junior Anderson each scored twice for Lakeland while Darcy McKenzie and Lance Gauchier added the others.

The Regals led 2-1 after one period and 6-3 after two before the Eagles rallied with three straight goals in the third to tie the game by the 6:54 mark.

However, Gladue’s fourth goal of the game proved to be the game-winner. Ah-Kim-Nachie put the game on ice with his two goals in the final three minutes including one into an empty net.

The Regals also came from behind to win in Falher. The Regals trailed 1-0 in the first, 2-0 in the second and 4-2 in the third before scoring three goals in the final seven minutes.

Ah-Kim-Nachie repeated his performance against Lakeland with two third period goals including the game-winner with 3:05 left. Rollie Gladue, Tim Cunningham and Steven Thunder added the other goals.

Tim Clayton replied with a pair for Falher while Josh Fletcher and Denis Rochon added the others.

The Regals go back to Lakeland Dec. 17 for an encounter with the Eagles before returning home Dec. 19 for a game against Peace River. It will be the club’s last game of 2009 before enjoying the Christmas break. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
