Regional: The year that was

Many of us share the thought that time flies.
It seems a short while ago we put 2008 to rest. Another year, some more bills paid. Another year, the grass grew, the sun set and the snow flew. Wars were fought. Accidents happened. Politicians made speeches and we paid more taxes.
Time marched on.
And now here we are, the winding down of 2009. My goodness, where did the year go?
It’s human nature we relate to special dates and happenings. Birthdays, wedding anniversaries and special events; these things come very naturally to us.
It’s fitting we look at Christmas as confirmation of our faiths. It’s also fitting we see the year’s close as a time of reflection. It’s a time to look back on a year, a time to count blessings and review happenings and a time to once again take stock of our lives.
It could be that focus on the big things during a year is what makes it seem so little happened. Start counting the little things and a different picture emerges.
Maybe there was a new car or a new job. You got the raise. The money was used to buy a new television. Your cousin had a baby. Grandpa passed away. That big new movie came out. You upgraded the computer. You learned how to use email. You have the most friends of anybody in your group on Facebook. You lost your job. You decided to stay home and raise the kids. You couldn’t afford to fix the furnace. The plants by the window froze. The doctor told you to lose weight. You stopped smoking. You gained 10 pounds and bought a new wardrobe. Auntie got really sick.
Good and bad, big and small, there’s a whole year of life and living that just happened. None of it really flew by. Good and bad, big and small, it all lives in our memories.
Perhaps, and hopefully, we are better people because of 2009. Reflecting on past triumphs, failures, and just plain old middlin’ events shouldn’t be reserved for just this time.
But, if it has to be, let this season and this time be it!
It’s a whole, long, eventful year to think about. Take a deep breath and give it your time.
