Democracy perverted
An open letter to Alberta’s Minister of Municipal Affairs: You have received a copy of a petition to stop the
proposed sewer extension to the east end of the hamlet of Faust. It indicates opposition to the project by a
majority of landowners representing two-thirds of the frontage on which a levy is to be placed. We have to
date no response from the M.D. of Big Lakes.
Renewable energy is the best option
I guess some Albertans have yet to take the time to read the 125-page nuclear power consultation report. I
really have to wonder how much the media has examined what the people have actually said.
Nuke or not to nuke
I am disappointed with the decision by the provincial government to lift the moratorium on nuclear power
plants in Alberta.

Ron Smith was a very devoted Regals fan for many years. Before the Regals’ game Dec. 19, Smith was
awarded with a Regals jersey in his name posthumously. The High Prairie Regals did not have a good night
Dec. 19. Even though the Peace River Stampeders were short several players, they outplayed and outscored
the Regals 9-6.

Shining Stars at Pratt show patriotism
Each month during the school year, E.W. Pratt High School will be selecting three outstanding students who
best exhibit the qualities in a chosen characteristic. November was ‘patriotism’ month at Pratt in honour of
Remembrance Day. Staff watched to see which students exhibited patriotism. December’s theme is
generosity. Congratulations to this month’s students!
Arden Korteum Grade 10
Arden Korteum’s favourite thing about E. W. Pratt is the people. He likes to play video games in his spare
time. Korteum is also a member of Air Cadets – a program that promotes both patriotism and citizenship. To
Korteum, patriotism means to have respect for his country. Arden says, “It’s important to respect our troops
because they are giving up their lives to keep us safe.” He is always respectful during the singing of ‘O
Canada’ and has been a member of a Colour Party through Cadets (the people who raise the flag). He was
also a flag carrier at the Remembrance Day ceremony in town this year. He spoke about lowering the flag
and being still for a moment of reflection. E.W. Pratt appreciates Korteum’s patriotism and his respect for
his country.
Jessie-Lee Caouette Grade 11
Jessie-Lee Caouette’s favourite thing about E.W. Pratt is the people and intramurals. Her hobbies include dog
sledding and basketball. To Caouette, patriotism means she respects her school and her town. She is described
as a student who always has a smile on her face and you can hear her laughing a mile away. Caouette respects
her peers and E.W. Pratt staff. She is proud to be Canadian and is a model student who treats other students
fairly. E.W. Pratt is proud to call Caouette one of its own.
Sarah Jenkins Grade 12
Sarah Jenkins’s favourite things about E.W. Pratt are the sports programs and fan support from people at
the games. Her hobbies include basketball, volleyball, badminton and track. To Jenkins, patriotism means to
be proud of where you are from. Jenkins is E.W. Pratt’s resident 0 Canada singer. She sets high standards
not only for herself but for other students as well. Jenkins is a great role model for others in her school and
her community.
