Jan. 7, 2009: The Prairie River Raiders girl’s basketball team scores six points in the final 1:16 minutes but still lose 32-29 to visiting Valleyview Hillside. In boy’s action, Dakota Banta scores 14 points as PRJH defeats Hillside 31-28.

Jan. 28, 2009: Loblaw says no new grocery stores will be built in Canada including High Prairie “in the near future”. Meanwhile town manager Larry Baran says work continues on the project.
Jan. 28, 2009: The Prairie River Raiders girl’s basketball team takes a 12-0 first half lead and go on to defeat the visiting Valleyview St. Stephen’s Rams 26-16. Elizabeth Potskin scores 10 points to lead PRJH. In boy’s action, PRJH defeats the Rams 34-14 as Harold Johnson and Johnathon Banta each score 10 points.
Jan. 28, 2009: Hayley Laughlin scores twice as the hometown High Prairie Young Guns whip Manning 7-1 in the first game of their two-game series in Peewee Female B Provincial play.
Jan. 28, 2009: High Prairie town council approves the installation of 12 new stop signs around town.
Jan. 28, 2009: Connie Roberts passes away at the High Prairie Hospital at the age of 63 years.
Jan. 29, 2009: The High Prairie Regals lose 8-3 at Valleyview to all but end their chances of placing first in the NPHL’s East Division. Ryan Reeves, Blaine Bablitz and Frazier Caron each score twice in the win.

Feb. 17, 2009: The hometown Grande Prairie Athletics defeat the High Prairie Regals 8-6 to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five quarter-final series. Brenan Jones scores twice as the A’s break open a 5-5 third period tie with three straight goals.
Feb. 17, 2009: Scott Patenaude scores in double overtime to give the High Prairie Legionnaires the series win over Slave Lake and a berth at the Midget A Provincials in Ponoka. Slave Lake won the first game in High Prairie 3-2 on Jan. 14; High Prairie won the second game 6-5 forcing overtime.

Feb. 28, 2009: About 45 volunteers work non-stop and make over 400 apple pies at Pleasantview Lodge. Pies were presold with proceeds to be used to buy TVs for the residents.
Feb. 28, 2009: The St. Andrew’s Saints boy’s basketball team wins the Smoky River Junior High School Basketball League title at Valleyview after defeating Valleyview Hillside 52-40 in the final. The Saints defeated crosstown rivals Prairie River 33-32 in the semi-final.

March 1, 2009: The visiting High Prairie Young Guns defeat High Level 6-4 to advance to the Female Tier 3 Division final in All Peace Minor Hockey League play.
March 1, 2009: High Prairie RCMP are looking for a male and female who robbed the High Prairie Inn at about 9 p.m. The man involved in the incident had a handgun.

March 16, 2009: South Peace News wins its prestigious seventh Blue Ribbon Award from the Canadian Community Newspapers’ Association. Blue Ribbons are awarded to newspapers who finish in the top third in General Excellence in their class. South Peace News also placed third in Best Editorial Page and Best Front Page.
March 18, 2009: The Dawson Creek Canucks reveal plans on a bid to rejoin the NPHL. Brant Leer, vice-president of operations, says they will attend the NPHL’s spring meeting with their bid.
March 18, 2009: Carla Davidson organizes a benefit concert for Nathan and Kaidan Denty. Gary Fjellgaard performs a concert at the Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre to raise money to buy a wheelchair-equipped van.
March 19-21, 2009: The High Prairie Young Guns win one of four games at the Alberta Peewee B Female Provincials in Viking. They lose to Strathmore 4-2, Provost/Macklin 3-1 and Lethbridge 4-0 but win their final game 2-1 over Calgary.

March 25, 2009: Bernie Poloz wins his eighth High Prairie Mixed Curling Club title in 10 years with a 5-2 win over Bob Heyde in the final.
March 26, 2009: Kay Savill wins the High Prairie Ladies Curling Club title after defeating Maureen Butterfield 6-3.
March 27, 2009: A team comprised of Jessica Adams, Rebecca Adams, Candi Cook and Jaylee Wolfe win the Kinuso School Science Olympics competition.
March 28, 2009: The High Prairie Tigers Taekwondo Club returns home from Provincials in Calgary with 11 medals including six silver and five bronze.
March 29, 2009: The High Prairie Skating Club sends 18 skaters to the Peace Region Invitational and win 11 gold, six silver and seven bronze medals. Allyson Gauchier and Samantha Laboucan each win two gold medals.
March 30, 2009: Marilyn Belva Kocon passes away at the age of 64 years.
March 31, 2009: The High Prairie Beautification Society decides to dissolve. Larry Baran attends and is elected chairman and immediately motions to dissolve, as per his promised mandate.

April 1, 2009: Alberta Health Services goes smoke-free on all its properties in the Peace Country region.
April 1, 2009: High Prairie deputy fire chief John McDermott leaves High Prairie to assume the role of director of emergency management for the M.D. of Smoky River.
April 1, 2009: Lynne Pardell takes over as the High Prairie Fire Department’s new deputy fire chief.
April 1, 2009: Police taser a Peavine man who became very aggressive during an attempted arrest.
April 1, 2009: New weight training equipment costing $20,000 arrives at E.W. Pratt High School. Money raised to buy the equipment was raised by the school council.
April 2: Long-time High Prairie postmaster Laurie Savill passes away at the age of 82 years.
April 2-3, 2009: St. Andrew’s School Grade 4-5 classes perform the play Pinocchio to delighted audiences both performances.

April 3-4, 2009: ‘For What it’s Worth Antiques and Collectibles Roadshow’ comes to High Prairie at the Legion Hall. Appraiser Arthur Clausen examines 107 items.
April 4, 2009: High Prairie firefighter Mike Caron is named High Prairie’s Firefighter-of-the-Year at the Emergency Services Ball.
April 4, 2009: ATCO donates $50,000 to the High Prairie Fire Department for construction of the fire-rescue training facility at the airport.
April 4, 2009: The Prairie River Raiders win their fourth straight HPSD championship in Slave Lake. Raiders players win 13 medals in the tournament. St. Andrew’s athletes win nine medals.
April 6, 2009: The RCMP announce the Faust detachment will not be closing.
April 7, 2009: East Prairie’s Hillview School holds its first spring concert.
April 7, 2009: The Alberta government announces in its budget that money has been set aside to construct the new High Prairie Hospital. “We didn’t get rejected, thank goodness,” says Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen.
April 7, 2009: A Kinuso School student, 12, who was being bullied, stabs a classmate and is charged with assault with a weapon.
April 8, 2009: South Peace News reports that High Prairie’s Allin Chalifoux wins free gas for one year (valued at up to $2,500) after winning a promotion at McLennan’s Kimiwan Konfectionary.
April 8, 2009: South Peace News reports that Pleasantview Lodge in High Prairie receives a $1.3 million grant from the Alberta government to upgrade the 27 existing units at the lodge.
April 8, 2009: High Prairie fire chief Ken Melnyk tells South Peace News he is alarmed over the fact that 50 per cent of fire calls to the department are false alarms.
April 9, 2009: Tilly Emily Gagnon passes away at the age of 96 years.
April 11, 2009: High Prairie Bethel Baptist Church Pastor Eric Kregel dresses as the Easter Bunny as part of an Easter Egg Hunt at the church.

April 18, 2009: Yvonne Fornahl and others meet at the High Prairie Inn to discuss the possibility of a community garden.

April 22, 2009: News that a grant under the Alberta government’s resource road program has been refused shocks the M.D. of Big Lakes council. Together, with other parties, they lobby and the decision is eventually reversed.
April 22, 2009: The M.D. of Big Lakes refuses to place a bounty on wolves.
April 23, 2009: The sign goes up at the municipal services facility in Enilda, now known as the Craig Bissell Municipal Services Facility in recognition of the long-time councillor and fire chief.
April 23, 2009: Joussard School principal Natalie Cole-Lamothe sheds her hair in support of Austin Norland, a Grade 6 student in need of a heart transplant. Others at the school join and raise $9,594.62.
April 25, 2009: Velva Harding donates $200,000 to the High Prairie and District Agricultural Society to replace the bleachers at the Agriplex. The donation is made at the indoor rodeo - an event which Tommy Harding dearly loved.
April 22, 2009: High Prairie School Division nominates HPE Grade 1 teacher Melissa Isaac for the Edwin Parr Award.
April 24, 2009: Carla Auger and Peter Laderoute are named the Bowlers of the Year at the Enilda Mud Bowl banquet. Auger rolls a 348 to win the award, Laderoute a 356. Each receive $1 a point for their award.
April 25, 2009: St. Andrew’s Saints athletes Billy-Rae Belcourt, Jesse Lee, Nathan Gingerich and Hope Sauvageau all win badminton medals at the zone tournament in Valleyview.
April 28, 2009: The Edmonton Journal reports Gift Lake’s Tina L’Hirondelle, 39, is Alberta’s first death due to the H1N1 virus. However, Alberta Health Services does not confirm the report.

April 29, 2009: Duane Nichols, Fern Welch and Louise Meyer chair a meeting at the Kisemanito Centre to attempt to form the Grouard and Area Historical Society. The organization’s goal is to preserve Grouard’s rich history.
