Busy sports weekend at arenas, gyms

Sports venues around High Prairie will be busy this weekend as two tournaments are being held.
A midget hockey tournament will be held at the Sports Palace and Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre arenas while Prairie River Junior High School and E.W. Pratt High School will be the gyms used for PRJH’s Rim Rocker Basketball Tournament.
The tentative midget hockey tournament has the Legionnaires playing in the A Division while the Monahan Ford Mavericks play in the B Tournament.
The Legionnaires play the Beaverlodge Blades A Team at 8 p.m. Jan. 15, Wabasca at 9 a.m. Jan. 16 and Wembley at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 16. All games are at the Sports Palace.
The Mavericks play the Beaverlodge Blades B Team at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at the GBRC, East Smoky at 11:15 a.m. Jan. 16 at the Sports Palace and Smoky River at 3:45 p.m. at the Palace.
The A final is slated for 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Sports Palace and the B Final for 1:30 pm at the GBRC. Teams would have to place first or second in their pool to qualify.
The Rim Rocker Tournament will see the girls play at PRJH and the boys at E.W. Pratt.
In girl’s action, the PRJH Black Raiders (veteran team) plays at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 15 against Donnelly G.P. Vanier. McLennan plays the St. Andrew’s Saints at 4 p.m., then Slave Lake Roland Michener plays Kinuso at 5:30 p.m. The last game of the day sees the PRJH Red Raiders (rookie team) play Valleyview Hillside at 7 p.m.
Games the next day will be determined by the result of each team’s first game.
The gold medal game is slated for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 16.
In boy’s action, six teams will compete. In Pool 2, PRJH plays G.P. Vanier at 4 p.m. Jan. 15 and Roland Michener at 8 a.m. Jan. 16.
Meanwhile, in Pool A the St. Andrew’s Saints play Kinuso at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 15 and Hillside at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 16. Kinuso battles Hillside at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 16.
Playoff pairings will be decided on where each team places in their pool.
The boy’s gold medal game is slated for 5 p.m. Jan. 16.
