The Horizon Credit Union’s local branch is closing effective Jan. 29, putting three staff out of work.

The board of directors for Peace River-based Caisse Horizon Credit Union Ltd. announced the decision in a news release Jan. 6. The board cites the economic downturn and an inability to attract sufficient members to keep the branch open.

“After reviewing the branch’s ongoing financial viability, the board determined that it is in the best interest of its credit union stakeholders to close the branch,” says the news release.

“Closing the High Prairie branch was a very difficult decision for the board,” says CEO Bob Carpenter. “When we opened the High Prairie branch in 2001, we were pleased to offer our credit union’s financial services to the community. Unfortunately, we have not been as successful as we had hoped to be in attracting credit union members. This situation, along with the current economic climate, has brought the decision to close the branch.”

Horizon also sent a letter to each client explaining the decision to close the branch.

However, local clients will continue to have access to Horizon’s 24/7 online and telephone banking services. They can transfer their accounts to Horizon’s other branches in Falher, Girouxville, La Crete, La Glace, Manning or Peace River.

Carpenter adds clients’ deposit accounts are 100 per cent guaranteed. They are encouraged to call the branch or go in person to discuss their options.

The three employees will lose their jobs effective Jan. 29, but they will be treated fairly as operations wind down. Carpenter says they will be assisted to secure other employment.

Lorne Neeson, the manager, has left.

The branch’s hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday thru Friday, for the rest of the time it remains open.

Horizon owns the building and will try to lease it.
