With the dance music in the background, members of the High Prairie Ukrainian Cultural Society offered an energetic performance to residents of Pleasantview Lodge Jan. 7.
There were seven dances – Senior Poltava (Tropak Fada Novic), Adult Tambourine (Boobin Tanetz), Intermediate Hutzel (Horianka), Beginner Poltava (Butterflies), Junior Poltava (Cats and Mice), Adult Volyn (Volyn Ochka) and Senior Gypsies.
The High Prairie Ukrainian Cultural Society is in their 32nd year and has 43 dancers. Their program runs September through January.
Their dances give the community an appreciation for the Ukrainian culture, says organizer Lori Zabolotniuk.
“It provides cultural awareness,” she says, adding the dances are named after regions of the Ukraine.
"It's just a lot of fun'" says Michelle Smith, a dancer and the costume director.
She also says it encourages boys to dance when they see men dancing.
Their next performance will be at the Elks Pro Rodeo grounds at 7 p.m. Jan. 23, although tickets have sold out.
The Vohon Ukrainian Dance Ensemble of Edmonton will perform as well and a traditional Ukrainian dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m.
