Sports: Regals outgun Jets in shootout

Chris Clegg
for South Peace News

The High Prairie Regals did exactly what they had to do Jan. 7, but fell flat two nights later to put another dagger into their dwindling playoff hopes.

The Regals outgunned the visiting Valleyview Jets 15-9 Jan. 7 but lost a crucial match 6-3 at Fairview to the Kings Jan. 9 to keep them four points behind the last playoff spot, occupied by the Kings.

With eight games to go, the Regals must make up four points but they have two games left with Falher and single games against Lakeland, Peace River, Grande Prairie and Hythe as they try to secure a post season berth.

And if the Kings should steal a point in overtime along the way, the Regals would have to make up three games.

The Regals outgunned the Jets as the goaltenders had a nightmare trying to keep the puck out of the net. Neither Ian Chwok of High Prairie or Kent Ryan of Valleyview had any help, as both teams fired shots at will throughout the night.

By the time the dust had settled, Lloyd Ah-Kim–Nachie had four goals and four assists to lead the Regals. Nick Anderson had three goals and two assists while Ira Gladue had two goals and two assists. Eli Cunningham, Cameron Rich, Daniel Belcourt, Tim Cunningham, Claude Cunningham and Lawrence Anderson each scored once.

Mac Caron had four goals and three assists to lead the Jets while linemate Frazier Caron scored once and had six assists. Ryan Reeves chipped in with one goal and five assists while Ken Breland had three goals.

The Regals led 4-3 after one period and saw the Jets tie the game in the second. However, the Regals pulled away with four goals by the end of the period and led 8-5 after two. The third period saw 11 goals scored including seven for the Regals.

The Regals went to Fairview in need of a big win to pull even in the standings but the Kings completed the four-game season sweep with the win.

Eli Cunningham scored two first period goals but the Regals still trailed 3-2. Cunningham would add a third goal in the third period to pull the Regals to within one goal at 4-3 but two goals in the last six minutes by the Kings provided insurance.

Trevor Morrow scored twice to lead the Kings while Chase Helgeson, Dustin Honing, David Austin and Cory Cox added singles.
