Peace Country Junior Jamboree coming

Mac Olsen

Taylor Iwasiuk and her group are eager to hold the Peace Country Junior Jamboree next summer in High Prairie.

“We want to network with other junior livestock enthusiasts in the Peace region,” says Iwasiuk.

The jamboree will be an all-breeds cattle show open to youth ages 5-21, including 4-H members. But they need to raise money and started with a “slave auction” during the Peace Country Beef Congress at the High Prairie Agriplex Jan. 8. Ron Marquardt acted as the auctioneer.

They collected approximately $1,650 and each “slave” will work for one or two days for the parties who paid for them.

Iwasiuk and six others have formed the Peace Country Junior Beef Association, comprising seven directors from the region. Iwasiuk has a passion for showing cattle and has attended many junior shows across Canada. Her goal is to become a 4-H Ambassador as well as an Alberta Junior Angus Association director.

Her sister, Dana Iwasiuk, is another director and plans to attend Fairview College next year. She has been a 4-H Club member and a Girl Guide member for many years.

Colby Klassen is the third director. He and has family run Willow Creek Simmentals near Debolt. He has been raising his own cattle since he was 11 years old and has a herd of purebred cows. He’s also involved with his local 4-H Club.

Jordan McQuaig of Sexsmith is the fourth director. He helps run his family’s farm, from haying to calving out cows and showing at all local shows. He’s been involved with 4-H activities for eight years and enjoys every opportunity he receives.

Jessica Fraser of Sexsmith is the fifth director and her interests include learning new things about showmanship and grooming, showing horses and her 4-H Club. She’s very excited about the jamboree and hopes new youth join and share knowledge together.

K.C. Reber is the association’s president and has been part of the 4-H movement for 10 years. She thanks all who bid in the “slave auction” and for the support and encouragement the association receives.

Jennifer Alexander of Falher is the seventh director, but no biography of her is available.

The jamboree is tentatively set for Aug. 27-28, 2010 at the High Prairie Agriplex.
