Stopping lead-footers on council's radar screen

People in High Prairie aren’t getting the message about speeding, says Councillor Jeff Burgar, after hearing the Town of High Prairie’s peace officers issued 85 verbal warnings and 39 tickets in December 2009.
The number hasn’t changed much each month over the year, despite enforcement, says Burgar. He is interested in photo radar and peace officer Alan Bloom is trying to find out what it would cost.
Bloom also says drivers leaving town are increasing speed at the UFA gas bar and are over 70-80 km/hr when they pass Big Lakes Dodge. In the west, the situation is similar in front of Petro Pass.
Officers are concentrating on those two problem areas, he says.
They are also issuing written warnings for expired insurance documents and registrations, which are very common infractions, he says. They are also issuing many non-compliance tickets for taillights, headlights and window tinting.
Bloom has received complaints from school bus drivers about parents passing buses when their flashing red lights are on, when dropping their children off at St. Andrew’s School. However, the peace officers have found no such violations when they have parked at the school.
They have been successful catching those committing graffiti against private buildings, playground equipment and town buildings. Seven teenagers have been banned from all town property for one year and two are facing criminal charges.
