Sports 02: Legionnaires, Mavs win tournament

Mac Olsen
for South Peace News

High Prairie’s midget teams, the Legionnaires and Monahan Ford Mavericks, swept the High Prairie Midget Hockey Tournament Jan. 15-17.

The Legionnaires whipped the Wabasca Warriors 14-1 in the A side championship game, while the Mavericks won the B side by default, as the East Smoky Rustlers didn’t play in the final game.

The other teams invited were the Wembley Wildcats, two Beaverlodge Blades teams and one from Smoky River.

The Legionnaires opened their championship game with four goals in the first period. Gordie Laderoute scored two goals, while Andrew Cardinal and Marc Laboucan scored one each. Laboucan also received an assist, Nelson Anderson and Jacob Pratt received two each, while Devon Quartly and Dutton Halcrow received one each.

Curtis Belcourt led the charge in the second period with two goals, while Laderoute scored his third of the game. Laboucan accumulated two more assists, while Jared Dumont, Devon Quartly and Chad Olansky received one each.

Then, in the third period, the Legionnaires turned defeat for the Warriors into a rout. Nelson Anderson scored two more goals and Ryan Matthews also scored two, while Carter Jamieson, Kyle Olansky and Dutton Halcrow scored one each. Laboucan received his fourth assist of the game, Andrew Cardinal received three, Tyrel Laderoute and Jamieson received two each, while Gordie Laderoute, Chad Olansky and Curtis Belcourt received one each.

Legionnaires’ goaltender Justin Olansky nearly had a shutout, but the Warriors’ Curtis Gladue put the puck in the attic with just 10 seconds remaining in the game.

Coach Robert Olansky is proud of his team’s 4-0 record for the tournament.

“It’s the first tournament we’ve hosted in years and it’s always nice to win the first one,” says Olansky. “Hopefully, we can make it an annual event.”

The team worked hard and the coaches liked their effort, he adds, hopefully putting them on the springboard for the rest of the season.

Coach Dave Bliss of the Monahan Ford Mavericks is pleased with his team’s performance too. They had a 2-1 record in round robin play, as they won 7-2 against the Beaverlodge Blades 2 team and 4-3 against Smoky River, but lost 8-3 against the East Smoky Rustlers.

The Mavericks would have played against the Rustlers in the B championship game, but the Rustlers had only nine players, so they pulled out and the Mavericks were automatically the winners.

Bliss was also one of the tournament organizers and says having two arenas made the difference. He thanks all the organizers, volunteers and the teams for their participation.

Marc Laboucan, Ty Yellowknee

The High Prairie Legionnaires handed the Wabasca Warriors a resounding 14-1 defeat in the A side championship game Jan. 17. Above, Marc Laboucan scores the Legionnaires’ third goal early in the first period, assisted by Devon Quartly and Dutton Halcrow. Ty Yellowknee was the goaltender for the Warriors.
