The High Prairie and Area Chamber of Commerce and High Prairie Concerned Citizens for Health Committee are asking local politicians to make their presence known in Edmonton regarding the new High Prairie Hospital.
The health committee agreed at its Jan. 13 meeting to ask politicians from the Town of High Prairie, M.D. of Big Lakes, and local First Nations and Metis Settlements to meet with Alberta’s new Minister of Health and Wellness, Gene Zwozdesky, as soon as possible.
Chris Clegg told chamber members at their Jan. 14 meeting that the M.D. of Big Lakes and Town of High Prairie councils did not have the new hospital on their agendas at their Jan. 13 meetings. He also asked chamber members why the new hospital was not on the chamber’s agenda, especial since Premier Ed Stelmach appointed a new health minister Jan. 13.
“I think we should be talking to the new minister and letting him know exactly what the government has promised us,” says Clegg. “We need to make sure he knows about our hospital and how important it is.”
Clegg was mystified no one was talking about the project at any of the three meetings cited.
Chamber member Karen Nielsen and president Gordon Olson agreed there was a feeling in the community that people had given up and that the government would proceed only when it was ready.
Nonetheless, chamber member Jeff Burgar, who also sits on town council, agreed a meeting with Zwozdesky was in order.
The chamber passed a motion asking town council to organize a meeting with Zwozdesky as soon as possible involving the town and M.D. councils, First Nations and Metis Settlements.
