People considering a career in child care are encouraged to take an orientation course.
Bernie Napier is an early learning consultant for the High Prairie and area chapter of the Alliance of Early Learning Programs. She made a presentation about early learning and child care training, including the orientation course, at the Elks Hall Feb. 2 as part of the Caring For Kids Conference.
“With this course, you will be able to get employment in day care,” says Napier.
The course gives an overview of the child care worker’s role and how to provide a learning environment through play. It also focuses on the importance of communicating effectively, observing children in play and keeping records.
There are three levels of child care education:
* Level 1 – Child Development Assistant, available online.
* Level 2 – Child Development Worker.
* Level 3 – Child Development Supervisor.
To qualify for the orientation course, the applicant must be a Canadian citizen or have a valid Canadian Permanent Resident Card and reside in Alberta. It is a 58-hour course offered at no charge and will give the applicant the Child Development Assistant level.
Napier encourages people to enter the day care field, especially with the possibility of a new day care centre opening in High Prairie.
“With a new day care centre being proposed, the early learning and child care training will be an asset to work in a quality child care environment, with qualified staff,” she says.
For more information about the orientation course, please call Napier at 780-524-7581.
