Timberwolves no match for G.P.

The High Prairie Timberwolves are smarting after a 13-1 loss to the Grande Prairie Thunder in the Midget A provincial playoffs.

The Timberwolves played the first game in Grande Prairie Jan. 30, which ended 5-1 in favour of the Thunder. The opposing team came to High Prairie Feb. 5 to finish the two-game tournament based on total goals.

Played in the Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre, the Thunder dominated the game from the outset, with four goals in the first period.

Angie Dovyer scored an unassisted goal and Meagan Seeley scored with assistance by Morgan Stegmeier. Kylie Hoglund scored the third goal with assistance by Doyer and Jesse Lariviere. Then Stegmeier put the puck in the net with Seeley and Jamie Bryan’s help.

The Thunder extended their edge lead in the second period with two goals, including an unassisted goal by Reanne Stojan. Doyer scored her second goal of the game with less than a minute remaining with Lariviere assisting.

The Thunder finished the game with two more goals in the third period. Stegmeier scored her second with Bryan and Seeley’s assistance and then Bryan scored with Stojan’s help.

Both teams received penalties, but the biggest were for Casi Cooper of the Timberwolves and Stegmeier of the Thunder. Late in the third period, each player received a five-minute penalty for roughing and a misconduct.

Timberwolves coach Arnold Gauchier is very disappointed with the lopsided loss.

“We’re just not going to the net, we’re playing a little too defensively,” says Gauchier.

But the team was missing some key players, including Machaela Rose, and despite the playoffs loss, the team is improving with every game, he adds.

Fortunately, the Timberwolves have time to get ready for the Midget A Female Provincials hockey tournament slated for March 25-28 in High Prairie.

The Timberwolves have several league games before then and will continue to practice twice a week. They will also get help from several outside coaches to improve their plays and work on their lines.
