A Sunset House boy has won a trip to the Vancouver Olympics courtesy of ATCO Electric.
Karsten Havell, a Grade 6 student at the school, entered ATCO’s Celebrating Excellence competition. Students in Grades 4-12 were invited to write a 150-600-word essay demonstrating leadership or commitment to their community.
Many students chose to write on their volunteer work at seniors homes or raising money for Haiti. Many, like Havell, chose to write on their commitment to a sport.
A male and female student were chosen from each constituency in Alberta.
Each winner received a one-day trip to the Olympics with a parent or guardian. Havell and his mother left Feb. 18 and attended the Belarus versus Sweden men’s ice hockey game Friday, Feb. 19.
Following is the text of Havell’s essay:
“I hope to be a professional roper some day. This is what I do in pursuing my goal.
“I practice roping on a roping dummy at home. I go into the local arena about three times a week to practice, as well. I go to dummy roping competitions throughout Alberta. So far, I’ve always won first or second place.
“Another way I work toward my goal of being a professional roper is by taking care of my horse properly. I do this by feeding him quality hay and grain. I also keep his feet clean and brush him. Of course, a roper is nothing without his gear. So I have to keep all of my gear in tip-top shape. I keep it out of the bad weather and I don’t keep it in the tack room for too long so it gets all dusty and dirty.
“Finally, perhaps the most important thing to do when trying to be the best at something is to talk to experts. I read anything on roping. I always want to learn more so I can get better and better at my sport. I know that it will take a lot of work to be a professional roper but I always try to be the best I can so one day my dream will come true.”
