Time and time again, the organizing committee headed by Patricia Belyan, Dayna Jarvis and others were complimented for a job well done before, during and after the Midget “A” Female Provincials in High Prairie March 25-28.
Hockey Alberta representative Wayne Curry says the tournament went off very well, and gave thanks to the committee during closing ceremonies.
The tournament was highlighted by many close games, especially the quadruple overtime semi-final when Edmonton defeated Grande Prairie 3-2. The final also went to double overtime when Red Deer claimed the title 3-2 over Edmonton.
Tournament organizers also made a fine choice in inviting Carmen Lizee to town to participate in opening ceremonies and drop the ceremonial puck. A graduate of High Prairie Minor Hockey, she has gone on to a fine college career. She appropriately wore her St. Cloud jersey for the ceremony.
High Prairie Timberwolves’ coaching staff also showed true class in shaking each teams’ hands during the opening ceremonies to welcome them to High Prairie and wish them luck. Every touch to the tournament seemed well thought-out and planned to make it the success it was.
During the opening ceremony March 26, High Prairie Mayor Rick Dumont welcomed all teams to town.
“I hope you enjoy your stay,” he said, adding High Prairie was always supportive of female hockey and boasts one of the highest rates in the Peace Country. He also alluded to two of the town’s finest female players – Lizee and Nicole Pratt – who have gone on to fine college careers.
“I hope you have a fun and memorable tournament,” he said.
Councillor Ken Matthews gave greetings on behalf of the M.D. of Big Lakes. He thanked the organizing committee saying “it takes a lot of work to put this on.”
High Prairie Minor Hockey president Patricia Olansky welcomed everyone to the tournament.
“We look forward to a strong calibre of competition,” she said, having no way of knowing just how good the tournament would become.
“It’s no small feat to organize this event just for you,” she told the teams. “Play hard, play with your heart. . .teamwork wins championships.”
Curry agreed.
“You’ve worked hard to be here. You’ve seen some great hockey here and will see even better hockey to come.”
A pin exchange and a photo of all teams concluded the ceremony.
