Poloz wins 8th mixed curling title in 10 years

The High Prairie Curling Club’s Mixed League concluded its season March 24 with its club finals. After several weeks of playoffs, Bernie Poloz won the A Event, Al Butterfield the B Event and Gary Adams the C Event. The A Event final between Poloz and Boy Heyde pitted the winners of the last 10 mixed club titles. Poloz won last year, Heyde the two years previous to end Poloz’s run of seven straight titles. The finals also featured two lopsided scores and one close game. Poloz won 12-1 and Butterfield 13-1 while Adams won 7-6.

Bernie Poloz won the A Event with a decisive 12-1 win over Bob Heyde. Poloz led 2-0 after two ends before stealing two in the third and four in the fourth to lead 8-0. Heyde scored his only point in the fifth end before Poloz scored four more in the sixth to end the game. Rink members, left-right, are skip Bernie Poloz, third Laura Poloz, second Jesse Smith and lead Brenda Stafford.

Al Butterfield, Maureen Butterfield, Brian Campbell and lead Kathy Campbell.

Al Butterfield won the B Event with a decisive 13-1 win over Rob Levy’s rink, skipped by a sub in his absence. Butterfield scored four in the third end to lead 6-1, then stole three in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game. Rink members, left-right, are skip Al Butterfield, third Maureen Butterfield, second Brian Campbell and lead Kathy Campbell.

Gary Adams drew into the house to score three and win the C Event final 7-6 over Tim McGrath. The teams were tied 2-2 after two ends, 3-3 after four ends and 4-4 after six ends. McGrath scored two in the seventh to lead 6-4 coming home but soon found himself in trouble. McGrath faced two with his final stone but wrecked on a guard trying to draw into the house which give Adams a free draw for the win. Rink members, left-right, are skip Gary Adams, third Brenda Anderson, second High Anderson and lead Barb Adams.
