The ninth annual High Prairie Gun and Sportsman Show was the place to be April 17-18, as dealers and recreational organizations had their wares and services for sale.
Garand Jones was the emcee for the event, which was held in both arenas. There were firearms and bows, hunting clothing and accessories, all-terrain vehicles, pleasure craft and other items.
The High Prairie and District Golf Club took memberships and E.C. Bar Ranch promoted its trail rides.
The High Prairie Fish and Game Association took registrations for skeet and trap shooting and sold tickets for a raffle for three firearms. Bob Rohloff took registrations for the Alberta
Hunter Education course and Dennis Hazen took registrations for the Canadian Firearms Safety Course. Rohloff and Hazen also displayed some of their firearms.
Staff of Alberta Fish and Wildlife had information about sport fishing and the boating regulations. Children had the opportunity to reel in a prize from the “fishing pond,” too.
Staff of Sustainable Resource Development had information about the mountain pine beetle and promoted their Respect the Land campaign.
Const. Lee Watt of the High Prairie RCMP Detachment provided information about recruitment and showed several firearms used by the RCMP, including a former sniper rifle, an M-16 assault rifle and an MP-5 submachine gun.
A dinner and dance was held in the curling rink April 17, which included a silent auction. Members of Connie Sabo’s belly dancing program held a performance before dinner, which they used as a fundraiser for a workshop. Don Cunningham and the Rocky Top Band performed for the dance.
Tammy Kaleta, one of the show organizers, presented a plaque to Mike Denty for his service to the association. Denty is the former president of the association.
Attendance the first day alone was over 1,700 with over 2,000 attending both days.
