Cunningham elected to lead fastball league

A long-time Peavine pitcher was elected by acclamation as president of the High Prairie Men’s Fastball League April 21.

Clint Cunningham will lead the league this season. Last year’s president, Peter Keay, stepped down but agreed to stay as vice-president.

Only six people attended the meeting, held at the High Prairie Curling Club. Those attending heard it was very likely the league would be comprised of at least six teams this season: Driftpile Titans, High Prairie Playboys, Peavine Canadians, Peavine Rangers, Peavine Young Guns and Whitefish Lake Hawks.

However, it is expected Gift Lake will field a team and a fourth team could again emerge from Peavine.

The deadline to enter the league this season is 5 p.m. April 7. Interested teams must call Cunningham at 780-523-0024 or Keay at 780-523-7749. Payment of the $300 league entry fee must be arranged by the deadline.

League play will begin May 25 with the schedule released around May 14. If there are six teams, the schedule will likely be comprised of 15 games or three against each team. Four teams would qualify for playoffs with the semi-final and final being best-of-five.

However, if there are more than six teams the schedule will be comprised of a home-and-home series with each club. Six teams would qualify for playoffs with first and second place receiving a bye. Third would play sixth and fourth would play fifth in a best-of-three series before advancing to the semi-finals and finals, both best-of-five series.

The possibility of an umpiring clinic was also discussed but nothing definite arose.

The only rule change passed was games cannot start no later than 7:20 p.m., giving teams five more minutes than last year. Game times are 7 p.m. each night with the exception of the second games at Peavine, which begin immediately after the first game is completed.
