Cat's Pyjamas, Goulets lead cause

Palliative care is something everyone will need in time, including families, so it is appreciated when the community comes together to raise money for it, says Louisa Rich.

She and other members of the High Prairie and District Holistic Palliative Care Society were at Freson IGA May 2 for the 18th annual Hike for Hospice Palliative Care Walk. They accepted donations and held a barbecue as part of the fundraising.

Rich is especially pleased with a four people, “The Cat’s Pyjamas,” who raised approximately $1,600.

“It’s awesome what they did for us,” says Rich.

They are Ashley Burback, Cindy Ho, Jackie Martin and Tina Wilson and it is their second year participating. Burback’s grandparents raised her and she wants palliative care available to them.

“Palliative care isn’t available to everyone, but it should be,” she says.

Burback is looking forward to participating next year.

Robert and Mable Goulet of Grouard also participated, raising over $2,500. He did the walk while she raised the money and it is their eighth year in the event. She also volunteers for the society, visiting hospice patients at the J.B. Wood nursing home and the High Prairie Health Complex.

“It’s really something,” she says. “You’ve got that room for the patient and their family, so they can have privacy. It’s set up pretty nicely. I really believe in palliative care.”

She thanks everyone who donated to the society. The exact amount of money raised was unknown at press time and all donations are tax deductible.

The walk was from Freson IGA, through Jaycee Park to the Elks Pro Rodeo grounds and back. A band consisting of Herman Burback, Nathan Burback, Lorrel Johnson, Ed Morawski and Jerry Stout performed in the store entrance.

The society’s event was part of National Hospice Palliative Care Week May 2-8. According to the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association’s website, the week raises awareness about hospice palliative care. It is also a time to celebrate, recognize and share the achievements of hospice palliative care throughout Canada.
