One of the longest droughts for High Prairie sports teams came to an abrupt end April 24-25.
And it came from an unlikely source.
The High Prairie Air Cadet squadron - yes, the cadets also play sports and take part in competitions – won the their first sports medals in 11 years in Edson at the Northwest Zone Sports and Drill Competition.
“It’s our first medals in over 10 years,” says High Prairie Legion president Don Ebbett.
The squadron won gold in volleyball April 24 and silver in basketball April 25, both under the direction of coach Gary Quinn. Dan Gillmor also helped coach the basketball team.
“We played three matches in volleyball and we won all three,” says Quinn.
In fact the squadron did not even lose a game to their competition.
The squadron were allowed to add three players from Barrhead but the team was mostly comprised of players from High Prairie. The Grande Prairie squadron was the victim in all three matches.
The next day, High Prairie lost to Peace River but defeated the Edmonton 539 and Edmonton 504 squadrons to win silver. The team also added three players from Edson for the competition.
The medals are the first for the squadron since 1999, when the volleyball team won gold and placed fourth in the province.
