The M.D. of Big Lakes has decided to continue with its policy of selling property to the highest bidder.
Council is advertising the sale of property in Kinuso after a local resident expressed interest in buying it to open a meat shop.
The decision, reached at council’s May 12 meeting, paves the way to anyone to bid on the 400 square-foot building and property, formerly the old police station and the current office of Spruce Point Park Association.
Kinuso Councillor Ken Killen favoured selling the property which sparked debate.
“It goes up for bid for another little business,” he said.
The M.D. currently maintains the building and did not budget to maintain it. Spruce Point Park Association currently uses space in the office for only $50 rent per month.
There was some concern the building encroached on the road allowance but many other buildings similar also do so.
“It encroaches on the sidewalk only,” said Killeen.
“I don’t think we should sell the building if it’s on a road allowance,” said Triangle, Gilwood Councillor Ken Matthews.
However, Sunset House, Gilwood South Councillor Randy Ehman wanted to sell because the M.D. was losing money on utilities and upkeep.
“Let (Spruce Point Park) know they have place to go,” said Ehman. “We can’t run like this.”
CAO Harvey Prockiw suggested council first ask for request for proposals.
“If we get only $50 a month and pay half the utilities we’re in the hole,” said Faust Councillor Violet Campiou.
Council passed a motion to sell with only Matthews opposed.
