Dancers put best foot forward at recital

From the little ballerinas’ performances to the Michael Jackson tribute, members of the Repertoire Dance Society offered a great recital to families and the community.
The society held two performances in the Performing Arts Centre at the Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre May 1. Brogan Severson, 14, enjoys performing for an audience.
“It’s a rush, you have to be an adrenaline junkie and get over the butterflies,” says Severson.
However, it’s old hat for her, as she has been dancing for five years. She did a lot of the preparation work for the recital, including the program. It will look nice good for her resume, as she wants to make dancing a career.
The event opened with musical theatre entitled “Hard Knock Life,” about orphans commanded to scrub and scrub some more by their wicked overseer of a woman. While she may be a slave driver, they laugh and carry on when she is not there.
Next were the creative moment and group one jazz performances. Then Jake Poloz, dressed in a rabbit suit, hopped around during a musical theatre solo and gave his take about trust and friendship.
Just after Poloz, the trio of Bronte Backs, Hannah Cottingham and Hope L’Hirondelle performed a graceful ballet. Then Marissa Jackson performed a jazz solo and later she performed a musical theatre solo of Little Orphan Annie.
The first steps group and novice hip-hop group demonstrated their talents, too, as did Bailey Shunter and Hayley Cox, who performed a hip-hop duet.
Zoe Barrons, Kaitlyn Cooper, Rhylea Hughes, Emma Keay, Sunny Poloz and Brogan Severson performed a modern dance called “Retreat,” with an anti-war message. Also, members of intermediate hip-hop – Zoe Barrons, Michael Cooper, Emma Keay, Paige L’Hirondelle, Jake Poloz, Elizabeth Potskin, Brogan Severson and Jess Verstappen – performed a tribute to Michael Jackson.
Other dances included jazz solos by Madison Price and Jake Poloz, as well as a lyrical solo by Leann Peyre. The recital ended with a duet by choreographers Nathalie Lussier and Nicki Moore.
Joanne Miller, a committee member for the Repertoire Dance Society, thanks all the dancers, parents, volunteers and others for their involvement.
