Diaper cakes perfect baby shower gift

Joe McWilliams
for Spotlight

Theresa Seraphim Spotlight Staff You could say it’s “three tiers” for Suzanne and Ashley Olscamp, a mother-daughter duo who have been making diaper cakes for the past year and a half. “I went to a baby shower and there they had one,” Suzanne explains as she shows some of her creations. After that party, she looked up diaper cakes on the Internet, and ABC Diaper Cakes was born. “I try to have a bit of everything in it,” says Suzanne. That could include a soother, facecloth, item of clothing, a blanket, lotions and creams, or shoes. Suzanne tops off each cake with a stuffed toy. “It’s very practical,” she points out. “The first one I made was for my daughter-in-law.” The cakes are composed of either two or three layers of Pampers or Huggies size one diapers (the Olscamps don’t use newborn size because more larger babies are being born). The bottom layer of a larger cake contains 20 to 25 diapers, while a smaller one will have 15. Each diaper is rolled and an elastic is put around it. The Olscamps use old wrapping paper or paper towel tubes to form the centre of the cake. After the two or three tiers are done, the non-diaper items are then added to the diapers with ribbons. “Some of them are covered (at the bottom) with a blanket and some are just decorated,” says Suzanne, adding her mother knits the blankets. “Everything is tied down so it doesn’t move.” Suzanne has sold 20 cakes so far, with prices ranging from $45 to $90. “I sold some in Wabasca even,” she notes. No two cakes are the same, and customers can ask for theme cakes such as Tweety Bird or Elmo. “It all depends on what they’re looking for,” says Suzanne, who buys items during her trips to the United States. She says it takes about five hours to make a cake, but it’s an endeavour she thoroughly enjoys. “It’s something unique and you won’t see it again…I’ve found it relaxing and it gets your mind working.” The Olscamps can be reached at 780-849-6629 or shortyshoes40@hotmail.com
