Anderson medals at Provincials

Chris Clegg

Another successful season of badminton has ended at St. Andrew’s School with Caitlyn Anderson winning a silver medal at Provincials in Senior Women’s Doubles.

Anderson lost the final but earned her senior high medal after placing fourth the last two years.

Leanne Cox is the head coach while Dallas Chelick is the assistant coach and coaches at tournaments.

“She played really well,” says Chelick of Anderson’s performance. “She won her first game and went to the “A” side. Then she won three games in her pool and the semi-final. She lost the final to the girl she beat earlier.”

It may have been a little disappointing to lose to a player who beat her earlier but Chelick says Anderson was still able to win the medal she and the school coveted.

“We wanted her to win a medal,” says Chelick. “I spent a lot of time with her.”

Chelick says they worked on footwork a lot, which usually separates the truly elite players from the others.

“She felt confident going in and determined to win a medal,” says Chelick. “She was happy.”

However, the school is disappointed because Caitlyn is the last of three highly successful Anderson sisters.

Chelick says the school had a very good year with about 20 players, mostly juniors.

“That’s really good,” he says. “We’ll have lots of kids to work with next year.”

This year, St. Andrew’s participated in two tournaments, zones at Spirit River and Provincials in Sherwood Park.

“We sent five kids to zones,” says Chelick.

Besides Anderson, Jessie Lee Belcourt, Billy Belcourt, Alex Marzotko and Mallory Caudron attended.

Chelick may be leaving and won’t coach next year. Cox urges anyone in the community to volunteer as coach.

“It’s important to mention we’re more than willing to take people who want to volunteer,” she says. “You need the support of the community.”

St. Andrew’s also announced its badminton award winners for the season. They are:
