Seniors Week

Chris Clegg
for South Peace News

High Prairie and area's week-long annual tribute to senior citizens is ready to begin June 7.

Seniors Week begins Monday with a Seniors Wellness and Information Fair at the Elks Hall in downtown High Prairie. Snacks and refreshments are provided as well as many door prizes to lucky seniors.

June 8 sees a dinner featuring soup, chowder and chili at the downtown Elks Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. After lunch, a seniors only bingo will be held from 1-3 p.m.

This year’s Fancy Luncheon will be held at the Joussard Community Centre June 9.

Each year, the lunch is rotated among M.D. hamlets to give everyone an equal chance to attend. It starts at noon and ends at 2:30 p.m. Lots of prizes will be given away and the entire M.D. of Big Lakes council will break from their meeting in High Prairie to attend as a show of appreciation.

For the first time, Pleasantview Lodge joins the festivities this year. From noon to 2:30 p.m. on June 10 they are hosting a wiener roast and games day.

The annual barbecue occurs June 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features beef on a bun. The barbecue occurs at the curling rink. Councillors from the Town of High Prairie and M.D of Big Lakes serve the lunch. Entertainment will be provided.

The week concludes with a Strawberry Tea at the High Prairie Municipal Library. Everyone is encouraged to come to the library and enjoy a bit of humour and strawberry delight from 2-4 p.m.

All events are free to attend and organized by Big Lakes Family and Community Services, with the exception of the Strawberry Tea and events at Pleasantview Lodge.

For more information, please contact Kathie Gould, High Prairie Family and Community Services worker, at 780-536-0062.
