Producers have new way of getting hail insurance

Producers getting hail insurance this year from the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation can now do so online.

AFSC provincial insurance manager Lorelei Hulston says the move was done in response to client requests, although those wanting to sign up in more traditional ways can still do so.

“They can still purchase hail coverage through AFSC offices and hail agents,” she says.

With AFSC policies coming into effect at noon the day after application, going online means getting the coverage faster which, says Hulston, can make a difference if hail is expected.

“So if it’s late on Saturday night and they hear a weather forecast that concerns them, now they can turn on their home computer and access hail coverage that takes effect Sunday at noon. If they had to wait until Monday to come into one of our offices, their coverage wouldn’t be in effect until Tuesday at noon, and by then it could be too late.”

Hulston says before producers can buy online coverage, they must first contact AFSC for an activation code, which will allow them to get into the Straight Hail website. Those buying coverage online get a two per cent premium discount as well as the two per cent they receive if they pay early. Credit cards can be used for payment.

Hulston says hail insurance is important for many producers.

“Certainly the risk of hail is there every year for clients,” she notes.

“Producers are looking to protect themselves from that risk.”

More information is available from AFSC offices or its call centre at 1-877-899-2372 (AFSC).
