It was the moment for
youth in the local 4-H
Clubs to show how much
they’ve learned about
raising cattle, as they
put their steers and heifers
in the spotlight for
evaluation.
The East Peace 4-H
District 2010 Beef Show
and Sale was held at the
High Prairie Agriplex
June 5, with the High
Prairie and District 4-H
Club and Coyote Acres
4-H Club participating.
It was the year-end
event, which entailed a
lot of work for the youth.
“To get their steers to
this point is a huge
amount of work,” says
Coyote Acres leader
Sandra Marquardt.
“They have to do
chores twice a day, even
when it’s 40 below, and
it’s a whole lot of work to
get the animal ready for
the show. I’m very proud
of anyone that finishes
their year.”
Guy Johnson, also
with Coyote Acres,
praises both clubs because
they worked well
together.
“It was a joint effort
between the clubs, including
the leaders,” he
says.
Tammy Henkel, the
general leader for the
High Prairie and District
4-H Club, says it
was a successful show.
Dale Smith was the
main judge and Ryan
Gauthier was the junior
judge for the show. New
for the 2010 event was
the dog show, which
Daryn Stewart judged.
Each judge received a
gift and thanks for their
participation.
Molly Marquardt, one
of the participants for
Coyote Acres, showed
Earl, a Simmental cross
steer with a final weight
of 1,020 pounds.
Marquardt placed first
in grooming, second in
showmanship and third
in the club’s conformation.
Marquardt spent 20
minutes a day working
with Earl. Winter was
the most challenging
time to look after him,
she says.
However, she enjoyed
the experience and likes
participating in many
activities with her club.
“It’s a good program,”
she says. “You get lots of
opportunities you
wouldn’t otherwise
have.”
Marquardt has been
in the 4-H movement
since she was nine years
old.
There were two heifers
and 15 steers for the
show. Many of the animals
were sold following
the judging.
Henkel praises
long-term buyer
Deerline Sales Ltd. for
buying Mike Ochran’s
animal, the Grand
Champion, which had a
sale weight of 1,189
pounds and sold for
$3,864.25.
Henkel also praises
long-term buyer
Delorme Enterprises,
which purchased Shelby
Kasinec’s animal, the
Reserve Grand Champion,
which had a sale
weight of 1,265 pounds
and sold for $2,530.
The leaders for both
4-H groups thank all
who supported the
event, including the volunteers.
