Students enjoy first track meet
Chris Clegg for South Peace News
School may be out for
another year but students
at High Prairie
Elementary school are
still talking about the
fun times had at the
HPE Track Meet May
27.
Students were split
into teams representing
different countries
for a full day of competition.
What made the day
even more special is
the meet was organized
by E.W. Pratt
High School students
and Physical Education
teacher Jenelle
Gallivan.
“A parent of one of
my high school kids
askedmeif we could organize
some kind of fun
day for the whole elementary
school during
our parent teacher interviews
back in October,”
says Gallivan. “I
think the parent council
over there wanted to
do something. I agreed
and left the rest up to
my students. They organized
and planned
the event.”
Students competed
in various races, discus,
javelin, wheelbarrow
race, long jump,
standing jump and others.
For many it was
their first competition.
Cheers could be heard
throughout the
grounds all day as it
didn’t matter to most
who won as long as everyone
tried their best.
Like all organizers,
Gallivan heard nothing
but positive comments.
“The kids had so
much fun,” says
Gallivan, who agrees
the elementary students
looked at the high
school kids as role
models.
“My students were
awesome,” says
Gallivan. “They worked
so well with the elementary
students.
They really enjoyed
themselves. They did a
great job in planning
the whole event.”
Pratt principal Dan
Sloan also commended
his students by saying
they showed tremendous
respect and patience
toward the younger
students. Gallivan
agrees the Pratt students
learned valuable
lesson from the meet.
“They saw how excited
those little kids
got when they were
cheering them on in
their various events,”
she says.
About 30 Pratt students
volunteered for
the meet from Grades
10-12.
“My Grade 11s
planned the meet and
were team captains,”
says Gallivan. “Grade
12s and 10s ran the various
events throughout
the day. Grade 12 student
Jordan Lewis
looked after all the results
and kept the
scores for the meet.”
Irene Roy and her
helpers prepared food
for everyone involved.
All the food was donated
by IGA. Both
schools extend thanks.
Gallivan is already
looking forward to next
year

Carter Anderson did not lack any enthusiasm in the
long jump event. Anderson is a student in Greta
