Spotlight Digger's Corner: Searching for fashion in small town Alberta a difficult quest

Digger's Corner by Diego Syz
for Spotlight

I won’t lie- I’m a man who likes to look good.

Living in big cities one gets used to always having a massive selection of fashion at your fingertips but finding the right clothes in small towns can be like finding a needle in a hay stack.

Most people have to travel off to the closest city to find a mall for the right clothes or failing that, have to count on luck for a good fashion find close to home.

But it seems all a little too much trouble doesn’t it?

For most guys it’s not a big deal what they are wearing- you just fall out of bed and put on whatever doesn’t reek of body odor.

This is especially true for guys in small towns where quite honestly it is best just to try and look like every other guy or you could start being seen as a pretty boy.

Personally, to avoid this I just go with plaid and blue jeans and if I feel I want to get dressed up - I do.

Although it really is not important how people see you it is more important to be comfortable with who you are which is difficult when people are making fun of you.

But I digress.

For the ladies no matter whether they like to wear jeans and a t-shirt or have to dress for the office- it sometimes feels nice to look good.

But looking good can depend on who you are and what is available.

What anyone decides to wear is their own business but it’s always best to find something you feel comfortable wearing.

By the time most girls get into their late teens they take fashion into their own hands whether it is planning trips to the closest city, making their own clothes or going on the fashion hunt at local stores.

That is where the true ray of hope is for small town fashion.

Instead of running around searching for fashion you can always take up the opportunity to do it yourself.

If this means picking up some scissors, needle and thread to rearrange some of the outfits you just picked up so they suit you all the better, you just picked up a new hobby.

Some people can turn the newfound make-it-yourself hobby into a living and of course, more power to them.

There has been a trend of small independent clothing stores popping up in small towns, which is great, if they last.

It is difficult for any small business just starting out to stay open for more than five years and that is a shame especially if they offer an alternative view to the mainstream.

Whatever your body size, colour or material clothing preference suits you, the only important thing to remember is how you feel about yourself in the clothes you wear- no matter where you find them.
