What better way to celebrate local artists than with a month-long art exhibit and an evening to show all the exhibitors community appreciation?
This was High Prairie’s inaugural year in hosting an Alberta Arts Days Celebration. With more than 1,000 events in 87 communities, Alberta Culture and Community Spirit is onto something great!
The High Prairie and District Museum was successful in their grant application to host this two-day event and are excited about the possibilities for next year.
“We’re just getting started,” says board chair Louisa Rich.
The two-day event started with an evening open house to view the “Room With A View” art show and the grand opening of the Jack Burley Cave. This was the last chance to vote in the viewer’s choice art show. The general public was asked to vote for their favourite.
“This wasn’t meant to be a juried art show, or to require an art critic to judge it,” says Rich. “This was for anyone to come in and pick their favourite regardless of the medium or the work involved.”
With almost 200 people voting, the show was well attended and people are already asking about next year. The talent we have in our community is incredible.
The evening of the Alberta Arts Days banquet was planned to express the community’s thank-you for all the artists who took time to bring in their work for the show.
The museum board and staff extend appreciation to Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen and M.D. of Big Lakes Reeve Alvin Billings for taking the time from their busy schedules to present awards.
The museum thanks everyone who entering the contest and the public for completing evaluation forms. Your suggestions and ideas will be important to the museum in planning next year’s event.
