The High Prairie public library wants to install electronic signs on the outside of the building and improve wheelchair access.
Councillor James Waikle, who represents town council on the board, discussed the two issues during the council meeting Jan. 11.
Waikle says the library would like to put signs on the east and west corners of the building saying “Library”.
“The current sign is only visible when you are directly across from the front door, which does not give people enough time to pull into the parking lot, especially out of town travellers who may be interested in stopping at our library,” says Waikle.
“Once past, very few people will double back, they will continue down the road with the attitude that they will just stop in the next town. Since this is a direct control area, I am asking council’s permission to have these signs installed.”
Later, council passed a motion to allow the library to install two electronic signs.
Wheelchair access is another issue the library has to deal with. Waikle says the handicap entrance to the building does not meet building code requirements.
“Both the entrance to the north and south doors on the east side need improvements. To do these upgrades properly will cost a parking space. But the library board is willing to make that sacrifice,” says Waikle.
There’s an interior door at the south side which should be removed to improve wheelchair access, he adds. The entire door and frame could be removed without too much trouble and a simple frame around the existing hole installed.
Interim CAO Keli Tamaklo will contact the public works department, who are currently dealing with wheelchair access issues
