SPN: Gov't proposes leasing land at Hilliard's Bay to Shaw's Point

Shaw’s Point Resort is asking the Alberta government to lease 50 acres of land in Hilliard’s Bay Provincial Park to add 120 seasonal campsites to its facility.

But before the park’s land is rezoned to allow the lease to be signed, the public will get a chance for input at a meeting Feb. 23 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Peavine Inn and Suites in High Prairie. The government’s Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation will hold the meeting.

The proposal calls for the land, located immediately north of the existing Shaw’s Point Resort, to be rezoned to facility zone from natural environment zone.

The government is touting the plan “as part of our commitment in the Plan for Parks to create additional recreational opportunities for Albertans, to encourage innovative private sector involvement and to generate opportunities to upgrade and develop additional campgrounds and facilities...” reads the government’s Website.

It adds, “a natural environment zone is intended for dispersed outdoor recreation such as hiking, while a facility zone allows for recreation activities that are more intensive and require more infrastructure, such as campsite development.”

Shaw’s Point Resort’s proposal says lots would be about 15.2 x 30.5 metres and be separated by eight metres. Road right-of-ways would be about 10 metres and the walking trails would be no more than two metres wide.

“The overall objective will be to maintain, preserve and integrate the natural setting and features found within the lease area with the 120 seasonal campsites to be developed,” reads Shaw’s Point Resort’s proposal.

The proposal also cites nine picnic tables and a washroom will be built in addition to the walking trails.
