Sports: Baseball playoffs returning to High Prairie

The High Prairie peewee baseball division won the bid from Baseball Alberta to host the semi-finals on July 7-8.

There will be a total of four teams of 18 players, plus coaches, coming to play at Jaycee Park. The winner of this tournament will go on to the provincial finals, which will be held July 20-22.

“I don’t think we’ve hosted a provincial play down in at least 15 years,” said Paula Cowell, High Prairie’s minor ball treasurer. “This is very exciting and it’s a huge opportunity for people to come out and start getting involved in baseball again.”

The two-day tournament will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. with High Prairie taking on Grande Prairie White. At noon, Grande Prairie Black will take on North Country. At 3 p.m. North Peace will play against Grande Prairie White. And the last game, which starts at 6 p.m., will see High Prairie take on North Country.

The following day, play will start at 11 a.m. when Grande Prairie White takes on North Peace. The second game starts at 2 p.m. when North Peace faces off against North Country. And High Prairie plays the final game at 5 p.m. against Grande Prairie Black.

For fans of the game, there will be a full concession, as well as a barbecue held throughout the day.
