High Prairie is gearing up to host the 2017 Alberta 55-Plus Fall Games in September and seeking community support.
“I’m sure it’s going to happen,” says Mary Zabolotniuk of High Prairie, president of the Mighty Peace Sport and Recreation Association.
“We’re working hard on it.”
Organizers are seeking funding and volunteers to support the Sept. 15-17 event. About 250 participants aged 55 and over and 60 officials are expected to attend.
According to age categories, participants will compete in 11 activities, such as bowling, darts, swimming, military whist, duplicate bridge, euchre, carpet bowling, floor shuffleboard, arts and creative writing, bocce ball, and horseshoes.
“We will require about 10 venues in and around High Prairie to stage the event,” says Michael Bain, treasurer of the Mighty Peace Sport and Recreation Association.
Organizers are currently seeking a government grant for the event with support from the Town of High Prairie and Big Lakes County.
“The government is not paying for these Games anymore,” says Zabolotniuk, who says she approached the Alberta 55-Plus provincial organization to bring the event to High Prairie.
Citizens, businesses, and community organizations are also being welcomed to support and sponsor the event.
A planning meeting is scheduled for Dec. 12 at the Legion at 10 a.m.
