A hockey tournament planned for High Prairie to raise funds for the Stollery Children’s Hospital did not happen.
The Cassidy Davies-Hunt Co-ed Hockey Tournament set for Oct. 7-9 was cancelled from a lack of entries.
“We were hoping for 150 adult entries, but ended up with about 45-50,” says event co-ordinator Bruce Willier.
“The downturn in the economy is hurting everyone, including fundraising events.”
He noted that even the Stollery Hospital is struggling with getting strong support for its fundraising efforts.
Organizers with the High Prairie and District Golf Course planned the hockey tournament after the golf tournament in June was cancelled from lack of support.
They plan to try again next year.
“We never say quit,” Willier says. “We have to do something to bring more interest, support, and participants.”
Children with health challenges were planned to benefit from the tournament, with 40 percent of funds allocated each for the Stollery Children’s Hospital and to children and their families, and 20 per cent to the golf club.
