Strategies and tips for businesses to lobby government were presented at the High Prairie Business Support Network session May 25.
“Your goal is to persuade the decision makers,” says John Corie, managing partner of Ballad Consulting Group.
“You’re trying to persuade elected officials or those who work for government to do something or not do something.”
The BSN is organized under Community Futures – Lesser Slave Lake Region.
“Relationships are everything, and you need to build relationships over time,” Corie says.
Strategies and steps to lobby must be legitimate and legal, involve relationships and trust, and having and knowing the right information to present.
“Lobbying should be thoughtful, strategic, and informed, not emotional,” Corie says.
“You need to choose your battles.”
He advises businesses to be open to lobby government, particularly with many policies and regulations that they face.
“Advocate for specific legislation, regulatory or policy change,” Corie says. “Build awareness around key messages.”
He says that is particularly important on policy that minimizes industry-specific or business risk.
“That’s a big one for businesses,” Corie says.
“Remind government of the role that business plays in the economy,” Corie says.
Lobbying can be done in several ways, with an awareness, education and messaging program, monitoring and advising, and support during meetings with stakeholders.
High Prairie BSN was initiated by Community Futures to identify and address local common workplace challenges and current labour market trends with opportunity to share information, exchange ideas and build partnerships.
“It’s proving to be something that is needed in High Prairie area,” says Florence Shambare, the new BSN co-ordinator.
