Northern Sunrise County/Nampa Family and Community Support Services understands the holidays are often difficult times for people dealing with grief and loss.
Although many are celebrating and enjoying the festive season, it can often be some of the most trying times of year when trying to navigate the waters of losing someone.
Because FCSS understands some people require assistance to learn to cope with their grief, they will be hosting Understanding Loss and Grief During the Holidays and Celebrations workshop on Dec. 3.
“The workshop will address various types of losses including death of a loved one, divorce, job loss, or health changes,” explains FCSS director Amber Houle.
“The workshop will help participants feel validated and understood.”
The workshop will be held at the Nampa FCSS office from 9 a.m. until noon and it will help attendees explore forms of loss and the grief that accompanies life changes. Tools will be explored to help navigate holidays and celebrations.
“Anyone who is navigating loss, knows someone who is navigating a loss, or those interested in learning more about loss and grief (should attend),” she says.
“Hosting a loss and grief seminar during the holidays is important for several reasons, as the holiday season can be particularly challenging for individuals experiencing grief.”
There is no cost to attend the workshop, as it is sponsored by Nampa/Northern Sunrise County FCSS.
“The holiday season often coincides with the end of the year, a time when people naturally reflect on the past and consider personal growth,” Houle says.
“Offering a workshop during this time provides an opportunity for people to process their grief in a healthy way as they prepare to move forward into the new year.”
Pre-registration is recommended, but last-minute registration will be accepted. Individuals can register by calling (780) 625-3287 or emailing Houle at ahoule@northernsunrise.net.
“Holidays and celebrations are often associated with togetherness and joy, but they can amplify feelings of loss and sadness for those grieving, making it difficult to cope,” Houle says.
“We will acknowledge different forms of loss (death, divorce, job loss, health challenges, etc.), grief responses, coping strategies, challenges of grief during holidays and celebrations, building support systems, and fostering hope and resilience.”
