Following is the response from Paige T. MacPherson, Alberta Director, Canadian Taxpayers Federation, in regard to the meeting not having quorum.
Given the unusual circumstances of the meeting, taxpayers are right to be asking questions and demanding answers from their councillors.
Any motions passed without quorum raise red flags.
Councils establish rules like requiring quorum to ensure government accountability. It’s difficult for taxpayers to have faith that their councillors are acting responsibly if they refuse to be accountable to their constituents.
Taxpayers can decide for themselves if they find it appropriate that certain councillors leave meetings and choose to not be present for certain votes.
While councillors have no responsibility to divulge what happens in-camera, they do have the responsibility to be transparent with taxpayers — and that includes the big question mark around the June 22 council meeting.
