Commentary – TikTok is taking over all of us

One of the world’s most popular video sharing app is TikTok.

Being able to access it from any mobile device is likely why it’s so popular. YouTube still continues to be the top video sharing platform. In fact, YouTube is probably what paved the way for TikTok. When you think about it, YouTube came first, and later down the line TikTok came. Not so original, is what I think.

I can see why parents don’t allow their younger kids to access the app. There is a huge variety of content that parents don’t want their children to see. Maybe it’s because they don’t want their children being exposed to the real world just yet.

I remember when it used to be called Musical.ly, when people would lip sync to music or funny audios. I was guilty to using it back then.

I’m not sure why they decided to rebrand themselves because Music.ly was still good on its own. But if a better idea is proposed, and more money was involved, I can imagine it’s why they changed it to TikTok.

I would say 2020 is when TikTok began to take off. We were all in a global pandemic and this app seemed to bring entertainment for many people.

All the TikTok dancing and being silly was not very exciting to me. Lots of people found joy in this app, I wasn’t particularity part of that group and to this day, I still don’t find it very interesting. I suppose you can say, I find it cringe. The app itself still has the same formula as it did in 2020 but with more of a modern twist such as interviewing people on the street for prizes. Likes and views seem to be the real reason why people still use the app.

TikTok was supposed to be banned in the United States (U.S.) on Jan. 19 but it was back later the next day. This was because President Donald Trump worked with the company to have it reinstated. Many U.S. TikTok creators were faced with worry during this time.

Maybe because they almost had to get a real world job. Which doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me!

According to some articles on the internet, TikTok is not available on the app store in the U.S. until someone from the U.S. purchases it. I have a feeling Elon Musk might have his eye on that. That’s only an assumption though, but who knows.

Another article I read online said some people in the U.S. even called 911 because they couldn’t access the app.

This was ridiculous on my end because it is just an app that could easily be replaced by another competing video platform. Of course, everyone’s thought was to go over to Instagram reels and YouTube shorts, but I don’t think anyone was actually willing.

Having it almost banned in the U.S., just provides an example that people really are willing to go to great lengths to have it in their own possession. Desperation seemed to be one of the factors and we’re all going to be there once in our lives, desperate for something.

TikTok doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. I don’t think anyone truly wants it to be gone just yet.

As for myself, it won’t affect me that much if it disappears one day
